Yoga, Ayurveda, Poetry

Study of the Sanskrit language in a systematic way, in the manner required for IGCSE and A Level, is not only valuable for students of Indo-European language but also for students and teachers of ancient Sanskrit knowledge-systems such as Yoga and Ayurveda.  The words Yoga and Ayurveda are both Sanskrit words.

Yoga

It is well known that the systems of Yoga practised today are derived from ancient teachings expressed through Sanskrit sutras.

A closer study of Sanskrit will help to refine the all-important pronunciation of relevant terminology, enable direct translation of sutras and facilitate more profound penetration of their meaning. Study for the IGCSE provides a sound basis in the language and is a good way for teachers to establish, and further develop, their skills.

Ayurvedic Medicine

Ayurveda the 'science of longevity' stems philosophically from the Sankhya and Vedanta philosophies.

Study of the Sanskrit language makes it possible to penetrate the subtleties of this most ancient science of medicine and to connect with the original teachings.

Poetry, Drama and Dance

Classical Sanskrit preserves a rich artistic tradition.  The building of a basic working grammar  and developing one's experience further at AS and A Level provides a gateway to begin to access the skills and extraordinary beauty of the ancient arts.  Kalidasa, the famous poet and dramatist of the Gupta era, for instance, is considered to be the Shakespeare of Sanskrit literature.
