International Sanskrit Examination Resource

Starting at Secondary Level


If pupils have not studied Sanskrit previously, there is a newly published book: Sanskrit: An Introductory Course. Series 1 videos 1 to 12 and/or the Year 7 videos(see side menu)  can be used with this book - they will help to cover the main things to know at this level. 'Sanskrit: An Introductory Course' may be purchased from  or the philosophy bookshop


1.  Mahabharata Stories, books 1 to 3: age 10 to 13 years  (published by Motilal Banarsidass and available from all good retailers) These books are modern, student-friendly study books. Series 2 videos 1 to 7 (see side menu) cover the main things to know in these books. Answer books are available to teachers - apply to ISER.

2.  IGCSE Parts One & Twoage 14 to 16 years (download free) These follow on from Mahabharata Book 3. Series 2 videos 8 to 10 (see side menu) should be used with these books.

3.  Literature Study Aid: The Set Literature which will be tested in the examination. Series 2 videos 11 to 13 (see side menu) will help guide study. Translations are also available on the free resources page.

4.  The Sanskrit Epic Civilization Course: age 14 to 16 years  (available to download free)

Specific IGCSE exam practice should begin several weeks before the exams.  This consists of working through past exam paper questions and Specimen Papers.  Exam preparation requires translation and vocabulary practice, as well as thorough study of the set  literature texts.
